"Purification - A Feng Shui Perspective"
by by James A. Moser
Feng Shui, the Chinese Art of Placement, has multiple viewpoints on space purification. It is a foregone conclusion that everything has a history, even the buildings in your community. There are the vibrations left over from the construction workers, and if it was a site of reconstruction, there are the vibrations of all those previously on that site. Even if there was no structure on the site, the land itself holds a long history. Indians may have lived there, or other energies may have been present at one time or another.
When I do a Feng Shui consultation, I like to interview the clients to see if they know the history of the site, as well as their own history during the time they've been there. Since every-thing has energy (chi) as well, objects and structures will hold energies bad or good. One common theme I discover in my consultations with couples who move into a house whose previous occupants got a divorce, is the unfulfilled dreams, the lost love, and the damaged emotions, are all layered and embedded into the house. If the home's occupants were heavy drinkers or drug users, long after these energies are still there.
Not all predecessor energy is bad though. Good energy can rub off on the new occupants with good luck. When moving into a location new or previously owned you must consider that it has history or predecessor energy. I recommend that some kind of space clearing or purification of the site be done to make sure that the site only harnesses your energy.
One clearing technique is to take nine oranges and peel them. Throw the pulp away, then take the peels and break them up into quarter and half dollar sizes. Get a bowl of spring water and put the orange peels in the water. Starting at the front entrance, walk clockwise through the location and use one of the orange peels to dip into the bowl of water, flicking the water out. Start at the front entrance again; walk clockwise through the location throwing the orange peels all over the site. When finished, place a fresh bouquet of flowers in a central location. Try to open up as many windows and doors as possible for 24 hours. After the 24 hours, you may pick up the orange peels and discard them, but leave and refresh the flowers for the next 27 days. Visualize your location being clear and purified. Saying words of blessing are also good.
How does this all work? Orange and other citrus peels have an extremely repellent quality. This is why you see lemon oil in many cleaning products. The flowers represent your new life force coming into the site. Opening the windows creates exits for old energies. Even after you have lived on a site for a while, it's still a good idea to perform this clearing. If a house has been cleared, you still might bring your own negative energy into the space, so it is nice to do basic clearings when needed. Of course, space clearing can also be as simple as walking through the site burning incense or sage to keep your space clear, holy, and purified.
